MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University men's soccer team started the 2023 season off on the right foot with a clean sheet victory over Catawba College on Thursday evening. This match was a part of the 15
th Annual Laker Classic.
The Lakers were dominant from the opening whistle. In the 5
th minute of the match, the Lakers were streaking up the far side as
Alexis Iturria fed
Gonzalo LaChica who sent a bullet behind the net for his first goal of the season. The Lakers led 1-0. Clayton State kept up the pressure as they sent in 13 shots in the first half. Despite that effort, the score was still 1-0 going into the halftime break. The Indians were only able to muster two shots.

The Lakers kept up the momentum in the beginning of the second half. In the 47
th minute, off a nice pass by
Hector Fuentes,
Adrian Gallegos chips the ball over the Catawba keeper and tallied his first goal of the season making the score, 2-0. The two teams were relatively quiet in the majority of the second half until the 88
th minute. After
Emmanuel Alerte was fouled in the box,
Christian Ransome cashed in a penalty goal and grew the Laker lead to 3-0.
The Lakers outshot the Indians 16-5 and won the opening match of the 2023 season, 3-0.
