SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The #6 Clayton State University women's soccer team played the #3 Flagler College Saints in the Quarterfinals of the 2023 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Women's Soccer Tournament Monday evening. The Lakers saw their season come to an end as they dropped the quarterfinal match, 3-1.
The Saints pressured the Lakers in most of the half. At the beginning of the half, the Lakers saw glimpses of good defense as they thwarted opportunity after opportunity by the Saints. Throughout the half, most of the Flagler shots were off target and handled easily by keeper
Trinity Chastain. The Saints then opened the scoring. In the 34
th minute, a Flagler attacker got behind the Laker defense and scored a goal, making the score, 1-0. The Lakers were only able to muster one shot and it came off the leg of
Lois Beer in the 25
th minute. The Saints took a 1-0 lead going into the halftime break.
Halftime: #3 Flagler 1, #6 Clayton State 0
The Saints continued to press the Lakers in the second half. In the 59
th minute, Flagler headed in the match's second goal after a nice cross from the nearside, which made the score, 2-0. The Lakers started to knock on the door as
Ida Ditlevsen,
Serwaah Danso, and
Carrie Consolino all fired in shots. However, the score remained at 2-0, Flagler. The Saints added a penalty goal in the 74
th minute to take a 3-0 lead.
The Lakers added a late goal in the 83
rd minute.
Amiah Sprunger-Hightower got behind the Flagler defense, went one vs. one with the keeper and scored her 15
th goal of the season. The Lakers closed the gap to, 3-1. That proved to be too little too late as the Saints ended the Lakers' season winning, 3-1.
