GAFFNEY, S.C. – The #19/#8 Clayton State University men's soccer team played the #14/#1 Limestone University Saints in the Second Round of the 2023 NCAA DII Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday evening. The Lakers saw their season come to end as they fell to Limestone, 2-0.
The Laker defense was tested early in the half as
Mauricio Uribe made a pair of saves in the first 10 minutes. Clayton State got its offense going as
Alexis Iturria,
Geo Rios, and
Wilfried Kamden all marked shots in the next 10 minutes. The two teams were tied at zero in the first 25 minutes. The Saints then scored the match's first goal in the 28
th minute and went up 1-0. The Saints took advantage of a nice through-ball in the middle of the field and the attacker broke away from the Laker defense for the goal.
The Lakers could not take advantage of four corner kicks and fell behind 1-0 going into the halftime break.

The Lakers saw
Adrian Gallegos and
John Michael Torres take shots early in the second half but they were saved by the Saint keeper. Neither team had any opportunities until the 75
th minute. Off a corner kick by Rios,
Mohamed Mahrous headed one into the box but it was smothered by the Limestone keeper. Mahrous had another chance in the 79
th minute but his shot got blocked. In the 88
th minute, Limestone put the match away with another goal and made the score, 2-0.
The Lakers fought until the end but ultimately lost this second-round matchup to Limestone, 2-0.
