Women's Soccer Upsets No. 20 Flagler, 3-0, on Monday Afternoon

The Lakers earned their first win of the season

MORROW, Ga. – The Clayton State University women's soccer team took on the No. 20 Flagler College Saints at Laker Field on Monday afternoon.  The Lakers used a hattrick from Amiah Sprunger-Hightower to upset the Saints, 3-0.

The Lakers did not take long to open the scoring.  In the 2nd minute of action, off an excellent through-ball by Ida Ditlevsen, Sprunger-Hightower marked her first goal of the match, making the score, 1-0. The Lakers continued to play on the defense up until the 40th minute.  As the Lakers were pressing the Saints, Sprunger-Hightower fired in a shot that was smothered by the Saint keeper, but the ball scooted across the goal-line making the score, 2-0.  Two minutes later, Frederrike Troldborg sent in a great through-ball to Sprunger-Hightower, who snagged her first career hattrick to make the score, 3-0.

The Lakers used excellent counters and great defense as they took a 3-0 lead going into the break.  Laker keeper Trinity Chastain made 11 saves in the first half.

Halftime: Clayton State 3, No. 20 Flagler 0

No team had any great opportunities to score until the 56th minute, in the second half.  Off a Laker corner kick, Felicia Wallin sent in an excellent header, but it was swatted away the Saint keeper and kept the score at 3-0.  The best Saint opportunity was in the 76th minute. Flagler was fouled in the box, which set up a penalty shot.  Saints forward Andrea Fernandez took the shot and it went off the crossbar and the score remained at, 3-0.

The Lakers played great defense and saw good goalkeeping down the stretch as they pulled off a 3-0 victory against Flagler.
