DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Clayton State track & field program wrapped up the first day of the PBC Championships on Friday and produced solid results.
The Lakers were led by a school record, a pair of podium finishes and several athletes qualifying for the finals.
Justin Johnson broke his own school record in the long jump with a distance of 7.05m. The junior placed third in the event after setting that mark on his third attempt. The event was a tight battle as Johnson was .03m from second and .02m ahead of fourth.
Shania Riles turned in an all-conference performance in the women's hammer throw after setting a personal-best mark of 42.49m. It was the first time this season that Riles competed in the hammer throw.
Similar to Johnson's long jump result, Riles finished .01m ahead of fourth place. She took third for good after her fourth attempt.
Three other events were completed on Friday in which the Lakers competed in.
Ny'Asia Green finished fifth in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.24m. She was just .02m off of fourth.
Na'ilah Allen placed fifth in the women's 1500m after running a 4:45.79 while
Courtland White also placed fifth in the men's 1500m with a time of 4:01.82.
Several events went through their preliminary stages as well while seven Lakers qualified for the finals. To advance to the finals, athletes needed to finish in the top eight in the prelims.
In the women's 400m,
Ariyonna Jones (2nd),
Aliyah Summers (6th) and
Ny'Asia Green (8th) all qualified for Saturday's championship race. In the men's 400m, the duo of
Nigel Roulhac (47.76) and
Tylah Travis (47.96) continued their on-track battle and placed first and second, respectively, to advance to the final race.
Roulhac came into the PBC Championships with the fastest 400m time in the conference with a 48.13 while Travis was just behind at 48.30. Both runners improved on those times, dipping into the 47 second range.
Derrick Ward was the fastest man in the 400H with a 57.03 while
Kassidy Harper placed sixth in the women's 100m after running a 12.71. Jones qualified for the finals in her second event of the day, finishing fifth in the women's 200m.
The Lakers are back at it tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with the women's shot put.
