TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Clayton State women's basketball team won it's second-consecutive game over a SIAC school as the Lakers took down Tuskegee University 71-69 Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Clayton State is now 6-2 for the season and won't be back on the court until January when conference play starts.
The Golden Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 7:16 mark, but the Lakers used a 26-6 run to close out the first quarter to lead 26-14.
Four Lakers scored in double figures as
Audrey McElhaney had a team-high 17 points. She added eight rebounds and two assists.
Clayton State held its lead throughout the second quarter as Tuskegee cut the lead to four points with 2:39 left to play.
Jadah Waite then hit a 3-pointer to put the Lakers up by seven, but a Golden Tiger layup with less than 30 seconds remaining made the score 41-36 at halftime.
Timi'a Swanson scored 13 points and pulled down four rebounds and had three assists.
Taniya Patrick added eight rebounds.
The third quarter was a battle as both teams traded baskets. The Lakers led 59-52 with just 10 minutes left to play.
The fourth was a low scoring affair. Clayton State led for the first half of the period, but Tuskegee went up 65-63 with 4:24 left in the game. The Golden Tigers added another basket to extend its lead, but five straight points by McElhaney gave Clayton State the lead back with 2:47 on the clock.
TU pulled back ahead, but again, McElhaney scored to put the Lakers in front by one with 44 seconds on the clock. Tuskegee proceeded to commit four fouls in four seconds to try to regain possession.
Diamond Swift hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it a two point ball game. Tuskegee had one more attempt, but it was blocked by Swanson as time ran out.
Waite had 12 points while
Raven Riley had eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
Hannah Wright scored 10 points while
Devyne Turner had five rebounds and three assists.
The Lakers went 7-of-9 from the free throw line while shooting 46.0% from the field.
