Two of the Highest Scoring Teams in the Nation Set for Showdown as Clayton State Heads to Shorter

MORROW, Ga. – In a matchup of two of the highest scoring teams in the country, Clayton State (5-1, 0-0 PBC) men's soccer travels to Shorter (4-1, 0-0 GSC) for a non-conference showdown on Tuesday, September 24. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Rome, Georgia.

The Lakers hold a 5-1 record in the all-time series against the Hawks dating back to the first meeting on October 23, 2003. That 5-0 road decision would be the first of three straight victories, including a 1-0 final the following October 23 at Laker Field and another 5-0 win in Rome, Georgia on September 30, 2005.

Shorter would pick up their lone win, a 2-1 decision in Rome, when the series resumed on September 24, 2014. Clayton State delivered a 4-0 victory on September 23, 2015 and most recently 7-1 on September 6, 2018, both at Laker Field.

NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Shorter enters the game as the top scoring team in the country, averaging 5.75 goals per game and leading in total goals (23) and points per game (15.75). They are also second in both assists per game (4.25), total assists (17) and total points (63).

Individually, Felix Guijosa leads the country in assists per game (1.25) and total assists (5) while Jackson Wheatley (3.75) and Thallison Alex (3.0) are second and third, respectively, in points per game. Wheatley is also second in goals per game (1.75) and third in goals (7) and points (15).

No shrinking violet, Clayton State has made their mark nationally, both by breaking back into the national polls for the first time in eight years last week at No. 19 but in the statistical rankings as well. As of the September 23 release, they are sixth in the nation in total goals (18) as a team, 10th in scoring offense (3.0), 11th in total points (45) and 19th in points per game (7.5). Defensively the Lakers come in at sixth in the country in goals against average (.361), seventh in save percentage (.923) and 10th in shutout percentage (.667).

Individually, the numbers are just as impressive as redshirt-senior Ryan King (County Durham, England) has delivered a tremendous start to the season. While he currently falls below the threshold of playing in 75-percent of his team's games, his totals of seven goals and 15 points would tie for third in both categories. He will rejoin the national rankings.

On top of that, junior goalkeeper Theo Blachon (St. Etienne, France) is tied for the second most shutouts in the country with four, is 6th in goals against average (0.33) and 7th in save percentage (.923) and 14th in goalie minutes played (499.05). Additionally, sophomore Brad Kay (Manchester, England) is 23rd in total goals with four.
