Clayton State Drops 2-1 Double Overtime Heartbreaker to Queens; Brouer Scores In Fourth Straight

MORROW, Ga. – Facing one of the better teams in the Southeast Region, it would come down to the beginning of the second overtime period as Clayton State (3-1, 0-0 PBC) dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Queens University of Charlotte (4-1, 0-0 SAC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Sunday, September 15.

The teams would combine for 10 shots in the first half (seven for Clayton State, three for Queens) but could not crack the scoreboard despite being very active in their respective offensive ends. That scoreless deadlock wouldn't last long once the clubs hit the second half however.

With the teams continuing to put the ball into the box, it would be the Royals that would capitalize on a loose one in front of the net. With 47:02 gone by it would be Anamaria Evans that would be in position in the box and put a foot on it for a 1-0 advantage.

Down but not out, the Lakers wouldn't stay there for long as it would be a very similar play for them just over five minutes later. Another scrum in front of the goal mouth would see the ball come free off of a QUC defender – right where senior defender Janne Brouer (Aarhus, Denmark) could chip it high to the right hand corner to knot it up at 1-1 at the 52:16 mark.

Following the Royals score the Clayton State defense buckled down and allowed just one more attempt the rest of the half but the offense could not take advantage of the 10 shots they would have in the frame, seven that came after their score.

Entering overtime knotted at 1-1, that extra frame would see essentially just midfield play or runs down the line that didn't culminate in anything, sending the clubs to double OT. It wouldn't stay that way in the final 10 minute period as Queens made sure the teams wouldn't need all that time.

Following a Royals foul just under a minute in, they would fight to get the ball back and it would once again be loose play. This time it would be extended beyond the box directly in front of the goal and Lulu Phan would collect it moving to her right and drilled one just over the outstretched hands of the keeper for the game-winner at the 101:26 mark.

Evans and Phan led Queens with a score apiece while Karen Juarez fired off a team-high three shots, all of which went on frame. In net, Erica Turner went the distance and made seven saves against just the one goal allowed to improve to 4-1 on the year.

For Clayton State it was their leading scorer in Brouer that would collect her fourth of the season, making it an impressive four straight games that she has scored. Senior defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) led the club with three shots, two of which landed on net. Junior goalkeeper Valentina Bonaiuto (Valencia, Venezuela) played all 101:26 and made three saves while surrendering two goals to fall to 3-1.

The Lakers are now off for nearly two weeks until they open Peach Belt Conference play by hosting USC Aiken on Saturday, September 28. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Laker Field.
