State Qualifying Thrower Kimberly Fernandez Joins Clayton State Women's Track & Field Signing Class

MORROW, Ga. –  Clayton State women's track & field has added another strong thrower to the 2019-20 signing class head coach Chris  Brown announced the addition of Kimberly Fernandez (Buford, Ga.) on Tuesday, July 16.

KIMBERLY FERNANDEZ: 5-7, Buford, Ga. (Heritage High School)
Another local product, Fernandez joins the Lakers after specializing in the discus and shotput over the course of four years at Heritage High School just outside of Conyers, Georgia.

In that time she posted a total of 39 top five finishes, recording 24 in the discus, 14 in the shot and one in her lone 4x100 relay appearance. Of those, eight were first place performances with six in the discus. She truly excelled over her final two years with 21 of those top five outings coming then, as did five of her first place performances.

Among those outings was a trip to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Championships in the discus as a junior along with a total of six region championship appearances that spanned all four of her years.

She would make two of those trips in the shotput, finishing 3-of-12 as a senior after a trip to the 5A Region 8 Championship as a freshman. Fernandez would qualify all four years in the discus, winning the region as a senior with a 1-of-12 outing after placing third as a freshman and sophomore and fourth as a junior.

Additionally, she claimed the Most Valuable Field Athlete award at the Atlanta Games meet as a senior with a second place finish in the discus and third in the shotput. Outside of HHS Fernandez competed in the Junior Olympics for discus, javelin and shotput with Impact Athletics Track & Field.

In terms of personal best distances she recorded 32.92-meters in the discus at the NewRock County Championship as a senior on March 26, 2019 and hit a distance of 10.97-meters in the shotput. That would come during her sophomore campaign at the Patriots Early Bird Invitational.

Fernandez is just as successful in the classroom as she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.92 GPA and made both the A/B Honor Roll and Principals List.
