KINGSVILLE, Texas. – Having become just the third Laker, men's or women's to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the high jump, Clayton State senior
Destiny Johnson (New Iberia, La.) will be checking in with updates throughout her time in Kingsville, Texas. Today is the first of those updates.
Tuesday, May 21, 2019 (First of Two)
So we arrived at the Corpus Christi [Texas] airport on Tuesday evening around 3 p.m. and we were in our hotel by 4:30 p.m. My first experience at the track, it was actually a bit intimidating at first glance.
The stadium was big and all the equipment on it was virtually new with the NCAA tags all over. The podium for Top Eight was already set up and in the center of the field and the meet won't start for another two days. I partially think it was meant for motivation. Partially because it certainly motivated me.
I began warming up and working out and it was pretty cool everyone was kind and really easy to talk to. After being there for a while and getting a few jumps in the jitters kinda went away. I realized that everyone here is just as excited to be here as I am and are simply trying to put their best foot forward. We all just want to be All American.
