DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Clayton State women's track & field continued an impressive showing as they produced another All-Conference performance and five more spots in the finals on Day 2 of the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Friday, April 19.
Â
Anchoring the day's performance was the 4x100-meter relay of junior
Nia Elmore (Hinesville, Ga.), sophomore
Chaviya Jackson (Albany, Ga.), junior
Jasmine Radford (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and junior
Shockera Betty (Tallahassee, Fla.). That group finished 3-of-7, earning All-Conference Third-Team honors with a time of 48.46 for the second such honor of the championships.
Â
Senior
Destiny Johnson (New Iberia, La.) made history as she notched a program record in the heptathlon, just missing All-Conference honors as she finished 4-of-10 with 3,580 points. Among the three final events she won the long jump (5.32m) and finished fourth in the 800-meters (2:45.26). She surpassed Betty's mark of 2,954 at last year's PBC Championships when she became the first Laker to compete in the event.
Â
In terms of those qualifying for Saturday finals, Radford delivered a pair as she finished 1-of-17 in the 200-meters (25.52) and 3-of-12 in the 110-meter hurdles (16.22). The former means she will have a chance to defend her 2018 title.
Â
She was joined by Elmore in the 200-meters (25.91) as she posted a 3-of-17 outing while sophomore
Na'ilah Allen (McDonough, Ga.) came in 5-of-22 in the 800-meters, qualifying with a time of 2:22.13. Sophomore
Corta'Nasha Mutcherson (Savannah, Ga.) rounded out those five qualifiers with a fifth place outing in the 200-meters (26.41).
Â
Betty added a 5-of-10 performance in the heptathlon, collecting 3,448 points to surpass her personal best from last year. Of the final three events she placed fourth in the long jump (5.09m) and freshman
Kiara Green (Ty, Ty, Ga.) rounded out the top performances with a 9-of-22 finish in the discus (34.17m).
Â
The 2019 Peach Belt Conference Championships will wrap up tomorrow, Saturday, April 20 with a bevy of individual championships at stake, a number of which Lakers will have a shot at. A total of nine individuals have advanced to finals and will join four other single competitors and the 4x400-meter relay. Stay tuned to
