Clayton State Blanked 5-0 By Flagler to Suffer First Defeat of 2018

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (3-1-2, 1-1-0 PBC) could not withstand a withering offensive barrage as Flagler (4-2-0, 2-1-0 PBC) posted a 5-0 decision in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 22.

The Saints would waste no time as they pushed into the offensive end and promptly put the ball right in front of the net. Out of that huddle Myiah Russack-Cradeur would put a foot on a ball from Charlene Nowotny and elevate it to the top of the goal for a 1-0 lead just 3:38 in.

Under 10 minutes later it would be the speed of Sara Sandberg combined with a nifty through pass down the left center from Annie Breen that would lead to a second score. Sandberg collected on the left, advanced it to draw out the keeper and proceeded to drill a hard and low shot to the back right of the net. That score would make it 2-0 at the 13:12 mark.

From there the Lakers defense would settle in for almost 18 minutes before a tight pass in front of the net from Hannah Dolores would turn into a goal. This time it would be Annie Habeeb connecting to make it 3-0 at 31:08. That margin would hold into the half and beyond.

It would take until the 72nd minute for that margin to change as Myiah Russack-Cradeur found Maria Castorin Mujica at 71:37. That made it 4-0 but it wouldn't stay there as Sandberg was the beneficiary of a foul in the box with 86:25 gone by. She would then loft the ball over the keeper on the ensuing penalty kick to reach the eventual final margin of 5-0.

Sandberg led the offensive onslaught with a pair of goals for Flagler while Habeeb and Russack-Cradeur and Mujica each had solo scores. Russack-Cradeur would add an assist while Dolores, Nowotny and Breen had one apiece as well. Sarah-Lisa Dubel started in goal and played a scoreless 60:22 while making five saves. She moves to 3-1 on the year. Maddison Lipson closed out the final 29:38 with one save.

The offensive opportunities were few and far between for a Clayton State offense that mustered just eight shots. Of those, however, six were on frame with freshman midfielder Pia Haug (Ytre Enebakk, Norway) putting both of her shots on goal.

In between the pipes, sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Richards (Huddersfield, England) suffered her first loss in the Orange and Blue as she went the full 90 minutes, making four saves and allowing five goals. She falls to 3-1-2 on the season.

The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, September 26 when they host Lander. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Laker Field.

NOTES
The loss snaps Clayton State's five game undefeated streak to start the season … they fall one game shy of tying the best start to a season in program history.
