Steady Offensive Push Too Much as Clayton State Drops 3-0 Decision to Carson-Newman

MORROW, Ga. – A steady offensive pressure throughout was too much for Clayton State (0-2, 0-0 PBC) to overcome as they dropped a 3-0 decision to Carson-Newman (1-0, 0-0 SAC) in an NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Saturday, September 1.

It would not take long for the Eagles to find pay dirt as Ben King slammed one into the box and it was quickly deflected into the left corner by Tobias Solem Karlsen at the 4:23 mark. They would make that 1-0 margin hold up not only through the first half but better than 10 minutes into the second.

With 55:55 gone by Philipp Diringer lofted a ball on a corner that found the foot of Mitchell Gutteridge. He would then knock it into the back of the net for a 2-0 Eagle lead. That margin would remain until a foul in the box with 6:42 left. At that point it would be Solem Karlsen that would put it to the back middle of the net for a 3-0 lead which would go on to become the final score.

Solem Karlsen led the way with a pair of scores and just missed a hat trick on a late header to pace the Eagles while Gutteridge had the other score. Diringer and King each added an assist while Twan Verwij went the distance in net, recording five saves and picking up the shutout. He moves to 1-0 on the year.

Junior forward Dean Foster (Johannesburg, South Africa) powered four shots, three on goal, to lead Clayton State while sophomore midfielder Mitro Turunen (Vantaa, Finland) had three shots with one on net.

Junior goalkeeper Leuri Fraire (Dalton, Ga.) started and played 45 minutes, allowing just one goal against two saves while freshman Kari Puustinen (Orimattila, Finland) had the second half and surrendered a pair of scores with two saves. He drops to 0-1 on the young season.

The Lakers stay at home as they host Shorter on Thursday, September 6. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Laker Field. That game will be preceded by No. 23 Tampa taking on North Georgia at 5 p.m.

NOTES
As a team, Carson-Newman had just nine shots but put seven of them on net … by comparison, Clayton State had 13 overall and six on frame.
