Pair of Goals and Slick Field Too Much to Overcome as Clayton State Falls 2-0 to No. 7 Lander

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Taking on one of the top teams in the nation, Clayton State (3-11-3, 2-5-0 PBC) could not overcome a slick field and a pair of goals as No. 7 Lander (14-1-2, 6-1-0) came away with a 2-0 victory in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament and NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Friday, November 2.

The Bearcats would break through in the 14th minute as they benefited from a free kick at 13:17. Oliver Brock lined that one up from 35 yards out and put it into the upper right hand corner to make it 1-0. The Lakers defense then settled back in for the rest of the half and the clubs would take that one goal margin into the half.

Brock would also factor in Lander's second, and final score, as well. With 56:20 gone by he served the ball from the right wing, finding Georgia Knight on the back post, where he promptly put it into the left corner for a 2-0 lead. From there the Bearcat defense would limit the Lakers to just three shots as they closed out that two goal victory to advance to the PBC Championship Game.

Leading the way for LU was Brock with a goal and an assist and Knight added his score for the only other offense. Jacob Withers played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves to deliver the shutout and move to 9-1-2 on the year.

Redshirt-junior midfielder Connor Atkinson (Liverpool, England) paced Clayton State with three of their 10 shots and sophomore midfielder Mitro Turunen (Vantaa, Finland) added a pair.

Senior defender Kwaku Dwamena (Lorton, Va.), junior forward Dean Foster (Johannesburg, South Africa) and junior defender Hector Gutierrez (Asheville, N.C.) each had a shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Leuri Fraire (Dalton, Ga.) went the distance, making seven saves and allowing a pair of scores to finish the year at 1-5-2.

The Lakers advanced to the semifinals of the PBC Tournament for the second straight year and 13th time in 21 appearances. They close out the 2018 campaign at 3-11-3 overall and 2-5-0 in the PBC.
