MORROW, Ga. – It comes down to just one game for the final spot in the 2018 Peach Belt Conference Tournament and it will be Clayton State (2-10-2, 1-5-0 PBC) head-to-head with USC Aiken (3-6-2, 0-4-2 PBC) on Saturday, October 27 for that berth. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in Aiken, South Carolina.
Â
With the Lakers holding down the sixth and final spot with three points, it's a winner-take-all game with USCA at two points and on the outside looking in. That being the case, the teams have different paths to the tournament. Clayton State advances with either a win or a tie while the Pacers only way in is a win.
Â
The reward for making the field will be a trip to Francis Marion, currently in the four spot with 12 points and a trip to No. 2 Young Harris, Flagler (10 points), which will be at No. 7 Lander or North Georgia (9) which will be at Georgia Southwestern.
Â
Flagler needs a win and an FMU loss (having lost the tiebreaker) to move up while UNG also needs a win and a Patriots loss. Because they posted a 5-2 victory in the regular season, they would take the higher seed in the event of a tie. The Lakers lost to all three during the campaign, falling 6-1 to Francis Marion, 5-2 at North Georgia and 2-1 to the Saints.
Â
The Lakers are an
impressive 17-8-3 all-time against USCA, dating to the first meeting on September 26, 1992 in the program's inaugural season. In fact, the teams have met every season since then with the exception of the 1993 campaign. The 28 prior meetings ranks as the third most against any opponent, trailing 30 against Lander (8-19-3) and 29 with Francis Marion (10-13-6).
Â
Clayton State won a series best six games from October 17, 2009 to October 26, 2013 and has two separate four game winning streaks. The Pacers won the back-to-back meetings, 4-1 on October 25, 2014 at Laker Field, and 2-1 on October 23, 2015 in Aiken, South Carolina, before the Lakers delivered a 5-1 victory in Morrow on October 22, 2016. Last year the teams tied at 1-1 on October 21 in Aiken.
