MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State (2-8-2, 1-3-0 PBC) men's soccer will take the field for their final home Saturday contest as they host Francis Marion (6-5-0, 2-2-0 PBC) in a critical Peach Belt Conference game on October 20. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Laker Field.
Â
The Lakers currently sit in sixth in the PBC standings with three points and directly trail both FMU and North Georgia, each of whom have six points. A victory would give Clayton State the head-to-head tie break with the Patriots should they finish tied. UNG already owns that over the Lakers with a 5-2 victory on September 29.
Â
While mathematically possible to climb as high as the No. 2 seed (currently Lander), the Orange and Blue is realistically fighting for the possibility to host a quarterfinal game as either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. Flagler currently holds down the three spot with seven points as well as the tiebreaker and could be within reach with three Laker wins down the stretch.
Â
Following tomorrow's game, Francis Marion will face USC Aiken and Young Harris in their final games, making the likelihood of more than three points a difficult proposition. That would present the possibility of tying them and earning the higher spot.
Â
North Georgia faces USCA, the Mountain Lions and Georgia Southwestern down the stretch and potentially has an easier path to six points in those three games. That would put them in position as a favorite to nail down one of the two hosting spots.
Â
On the flip side, the Lakers need to continue to amass points as the Pacers are directly behind them in seventh with two points. Those teams will meet in the regular season finale on Saturday, October 27 in a game that could decide who keeps playing and who goes home.
Â
In terms of series history, the one with Francis Marion is one of the longest in program history, the Lakers trail the
all-time series at 10-12-6 over 28 games with the Patriots dating back to the first meeting on October 8, 1993. After going 0-7-2 in the first nine meetings, Clayton State rebounded for an impressive 12 game unbeaten streak from November 1, 2003 through October 13, 2012.
Â
That stretch included three straight ties from October 27, 2007 to October 11, 2009. Most recently, FMU has won the last two, and five of the last seven, picking up a 5-3 victory at Laker Field on October 1, 2016 and a narrow 2-1 decision in Florence, South Carolina on September 30, 2017.
