Two Early Goals Torpedo Clayton State in 2-0 Loss at Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Clayton State (5-5-3, 2-5-1 PBC) could not overcome a pair of early goals as Georgia College (9-3-2, 3-2-2 PBC) registered a 2-0 win in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Wednesday, October 17.

Facing a team that has recorded eight shutouts in 13 games, the Lakers found themselves in the unenviable position of trailing early. That would come to pass in the 10th minute as Kai Jeffries found Sofia Lekas for a 1-0 lead at the 9:16 mark.

That would turn into a two goal margin just over 21 minutes later as Alyssa Beramini and Cassie Balzano hooked up in the 31st minute, with Balzano ending up burying it into the net with 30:52 gone by. That 2-0 lead would then hold into the half and deep into the second 45 minute frame.

As it turned out, that would be all of the scoring as the teams combined for just 11 shots in the second half. Both would finish with 10 total shots with the Lakers putting all but one of theirs on net while GC had six in the two goal victory.

Balzano and Lekas each had a score for the Bobcats while Jeffries and Bergamini posted an assist apiece to round out the scoring. Ashlee Graham delivered her seventh shutout of the season, making eight saves in 90 minutes to improve to 9-3-2.

Junior defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) led Clayton State with four shots, all on goal, while freshman midfielder Chiara Rosener (Minden, Germany) had a pair of attempts, one on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Richards (Huddersfield, England) played all 90 minutes and made four saves against two goals allowed. She falls to 5-5-3 on the year.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, October 20 when they travel to Young Harris. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
