MORROW, Ga. – In an evenly matched affair, Clayton State (2-4, 0-3 PBC) battled Georgia College (3-3, 2-1 PBC) but could not recover from a second half goal as they fell by a 2-1 score in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 23.
Â
The Bobcats would strike first as Amanda Bartholomew drove down the middle of the field before serving the ball to the right wing. Cassie Balzano would collect the ball there and proceed to loft the ball over the keeper to the back left corner for a 1-0 lead at 13:06.
Â
Following more than 16 minutes of scoreless play, it would be the Lakers turn. Benefitting from a foul in the box, Clayton State sophomore defender
Janne Brouer (Aarhus, Denmark) lined up for a penalty kick at the 29:42 mark. She would choose wisely, putting the ball to the right side and past the keeper to knot the score at 1-1.
Â
After the teams headed to the break deadlocked, it would take until the 63
rd minute before someone else would find the back of the net. Despite the Lakers firing off five of their eight second half shots during that time, it would be the Bobcats Emily Petersen to break the tie. With 62:28 gone by she collected a loose ball in front of the left post and played it to the back left corner for a 2-1 lead.
Â
Clayton State would notch three more shots the rest of the way but would put none on goal as GC held on for the narrow 2-1 victory. The game represents the Lakers fourth straight one goal margin finish.
Â
Petersen and Balzano led the Bobcats with a goal apiece while Bartholomew had the only assist. Ashlee Graham played all 90 minutes and made nine saves against just one goal to improve to 3-3 on the year.
Â
Brouer's first career goal as a Laker was the offensive highlight for the home team as Clayton State notched 19 shots, 10 of those on goal. Both of those are season highs and the 19 shots is the most since registering 21 vs. USC Aiken on October 22, 2016. Leading the way were senior forward
Iciar Duran (Madrid, Spain) with six shots and sophomore defender
Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) with five.
Â
Redshirt-senior goalkeeper
Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) went the distance in goal as she made five saves against two goals allowed. She falls to 2-4 on the season.
Â
The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, September 27 when they head to Chattanooga, Tennessee for a neutral site contest. That game will be against No. 9 Carson-Newman with a start time of 5 p.m.
