Clayton State Ties Third-Highest Goal Output in Program History in 8-0 Drubbing of Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. – Clayton State (4-6, 1-4 PBC) gave no quarter as they pummeled first year Albany State (0-9) by an 8-0 score in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 7. That goal total equaled the third-highest in program history and most in 13 years.

The Lakers jumped out ahead early as sophomore defender Janne Brouer (Aarhus, Denmark) once again displayed a penchant for penalty kicks. Entering this season without a score on her ledger, the imposing defender has made a habit of delivering following a foul in the box. She did so against Georgia College on September 23 and last time out against No. 15 Columbus State three days ago.

On this night, she drew a foul in the box at the 2:48 mark and promptly buried the ball into the net for her third goal of the season. It would stay a 1-0 margin for nearly 30 minutes before Clayton State struck again, this time with a score from sophomore midfielder Andrea Rodriguez (Monterrey, Mexico) at the 31:58 mark.

It wouldn't take as long to add to that total, however, as Rodriguez dished to sophomore defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) to make it 3-0 at 35:18. That margin would hold until the half but would change dramatically right out of the break.

Just 33 seconds in, senior forward Iciar Duran (Madrid, Spain) connected for a four goal difference and was quickly followed by senior forward Skyler Young (Conyers, Ga.). She took converted a pass from Baquerizo for a 5-0 lead at 47:29.

The hits would just keep coming as freshman midfielder Ann-Cathrin Zabel (Schwarme, Germany) picked up her seventh goal of the season to push to a six goal advantage right at the 67 minute mark. Just over 13 minutes later that lead would grow to 7-0 as Rodriguez found Young at 80:05.

Sophomore midfielder Jane McKevitt (Thurles, Ireland) would get in on the action with a little help from senior midfielder Tovin Saleh (Linkoping, Sweden) as the two connected for the Lakers eight goal of the night, this one at 87:44. That 8-0 spread would go on to be the final margin just a few minutes later.

Held scoreless for the seventh time this season, the Rams were led by Jenna Wade and Leticia Cupulille with three shots apiece. Each would put two on goal while Alesha Kostrzwa and Roberta DaSilva Lima had the club's other two shots. Abby Whiteside played all 90 minutes in net, surrendering eight goals while making 11 saves to fall to 0-9 on the year.

Clayton State benefitted from a balanced attack as a total of eight different players contributed on the offensive side of the ball. Young led the way with a career-high two goals while Rodriguez finished with a goal and a pair of assists. Baquerizo posted a goal and assist and Brouer, McKevitt, Duran and Zabel each had solo scores.

Freshman goalkeeper Maria Notario (Medina del Camp, Valladolid, Spain) got her first collegiate start in goal and played the first half. In that time she faced six shots and made a pair of saves to go to 1-0. Freshman goalkeeper Filippa Svan (Boras, Sweden) saw the first action of her career as she played the second half and notched a clean sheet with two saves on as many shots faced.

Historically, the Lakers eight goals ties for the third most in a single game in program history and the eight goal margin ties as the second highest. The goal total trails only a 10-2 blasting of Spelman on October 23, 2003, a 9-2 decision over North Alabama on October 17, 2004 and 9-0 win vs. Spelman on October 4, 2002.

It equals an 8-2 victory at Wesleyan on September 17, 1997 and also matches that game for the most goals scored on the road by a Laker team. The margin of victory trails only the 2002 Spelman game (nine goals) and ties the 2003 Spelman contest (eight goals).

The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, October 11 when they host Georgia Southwestern (0-9, 0-4 PBC) in a matinee affair. Game time is set for a special 3:30 p.m. start at Laker Field.
