MORROW, Ga. – Coming off of a narrow 2-1 decision at Flagler (5-8-1, 4-3-0 PBC) this past Saturday, Clayton State (7-8-1, 2-4-1 PBC) heads right back to Florida for a 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday, October 31. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in St. Augustine, Florida.
Â
Clayton State makes its return to the PBC Tournament with its 20
th appearance following 19 consecutive trips from 1997-2015. During that time they have won three championships, including 2000, 2005 and 2007. Eleven of those years have seen them advance to at least the semifinals.
Â
With a trip right back to St. Augustine for the quarterfinals, it marks just the third time in program history that the team will play the same opponent in consecutive games. The last came in 2007 when they defeated Lander 3-2 in overtime to win the Peach Belt Conference Tournament and then dropped a 1-0 decision in the first of the NCAA Division II Tournament. Both of those games were played at Laker Field. As a side note, Morrow, Georgia was also the last time the league championships were held outside of Evans, Georgia.
Â
The first occurrence came 10 years earlier in 1997 when USC Spartanburg (now USC Upstate) posted an 11-0 win on October 29 and then a 7-0 victory in the first round of the PBC Tournament on November 5. Both games were in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Clayton State is
3-9-1 in 13 all-time meetings with the Saints, dating back to the first meeting on October 26, 1996. FC would win that game 3-1 as they took the first three match ups before Clayton State picked up a 1-0 win on November 12, 2010. Flagler would take the next three games before the teams tied, 2-2, on September 21, 2013.
Â
The Lakers then notched the next two before dropping the 2015 meeting 3-2 on September 19 and falling 4-3 last season on October 29. Most recently they are coming off of that 2-1 defeat in St. Augustine this past Saturday.
Â
This will be the third all-time meeting in the PBC Tournament for the teams. The first came in 2011 when the Saints posted a 3-2 overtime victory in the semifinals in Evans, Georgia on their way to a PBC Tournament Championship and eventual berth in the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals. The Lakers picked up their victory when they earned a 4-2 quarterfinal decision in 2014 at Laker Field.
Â
The advancing team will move on to Evans where they will face No. 1 seed and PBC Regular Season Champion Lander in the semifinals. That game will be on Friday, November 3 at 5 p.m.
