MORROW, Ga. – In what would be a defensive battle, Clayton State (5-7, 2-5 PBC) pushed Young Harris (8-3-1, 5-1-1 PBC) to the limit before dropping a narrow 1-0 decision in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Wednesday, October 18.
Â
Both team's defenses would be up to the task over the game's first 36 minutes before the Mountain Lions finally broke through in the 37
th minute. That would come in the form of Maria Guzman who recovered a loose ball beyond the 18 yard line and proceeded to loft it over the keeper to the top left corner for a 1-0 lead at 36:17.
Â
That margin would then hold not only into the half but into the second 45 minute session. Both teams would come out firing, combining for 15 shots over the first 34 minutes but neither would find the back of the net. It would not change much over the final 11 minutes, however, as neither club could reach the back of the goal as YHC escaped with a narrow 1-0 decision.
Â
Guzman would deliver the only offense for the Mountain Lions with her lone goal while Emily Ober produced four shots, three on goal. Defensively, Nicole Medeiros played all 90 minutes and earned the shutout with nine saves. She moves to 8-3-1 on the year.
Â
For Clayton State, sophomore defender
Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fired off five shots, three on net, while sophomore midfielder
Andrea Rodriguez (Monterrey, Mexico) finished with four and three, respectively. In goal, redshirt-senior goalkeeper
Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) did just about all she could do, surrendering one goal out of her reach against 10 saves in 90 minutes. She drops to 2-5 on the season.
Â
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, October 21 when they travel to USC Aiken. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
