Second Straight Comeback Gives Clayton State 2-0 Start; Knock Off Christian Brothers 2-1

MORROW, Ga. – In what seems to have become a habit, Clayton State (2-0, 0-0 PBC) put together a second consecutive come-from-behind victory as they downed Christian Brothers (0-2, 0-0 GSC) 2-1 for the first time in program history in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 3.

Neither team would capitalize in the first half as the Lakers took just five shots and the Buccaneers did not manage a shot, on goal or otherwise. That would lead to a scoreless first half, which would be a trend that would continue for the first 10 minutes of the second.

CBU's Crissy Cornacchia would put an end to that stretch as she handled a corner from Alex Swanson and found the back of the net at the 60:08 mark. That 1-0 lead wouldn't last long as Clayton State came right back 10 minutes later.

For the second straight game, which is equal to her entire Laker career, freshman defender Manoly Baquerizo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) would find the back of the net. This time it would be from the top of the box on a free kick at 70:16 to tie the game at 1-1.

Twelve minutes later, Clayton State would strike again as graduate midfielder Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) found junior forward Iciar Duran (Madrid, Spain), who promptly buried the go-ahead goal at the 82:48 mark. From there, a Lakers defense that had been solid all night closed the deal to lock up the 2-1 victory.

For the Bucs, Cornacchia registered the only offense with her lone goal while Swanson picked up the assist. Defensively, Emily Wragg played all 90 minutes in goal, surrendering both scores and making five saves to fall to 0-2 on the year.

Duran and Baquerizo, who scored the game-winner at West Georgia in the season opener, paced Clayton State with a goal apiece and Marti Bartis added an assist. Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Jessica Charman (Harefield, England) was once again on top of her game as she went the distance, making three saves and allowing just the one goal. She is now 2-0 on the young season.

After opening the season on the road for their first two games, the Lakers return to home to face their third straight Gulf South Conference member. They will host Valdosta State on Wednesday, September 7 at Laker Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Morrow, Georgia.

NOTES
CBU had won the two previous games in the series, 3-2 on September 7, 2014 (Morrow, Ga.) and 2-1 on September 5, 2015 (Memphis, Tenn.).
