GAFFNEY, S.C. – In just their second ever meeting, Clayton State (3-1, 0-0 PBC) battled Limestone (2-1, 0-0 CC) before falling by a 2-1 score in overtime in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 10.
Â
It didn't take long for both teams to get on the scoreboard early on as Limestone's Holly Rawcliffe was fouled in the box in the sixth minute. That play resulted in a penalty kick which she would convert for a 1-0 lead at the 5:38 mark.
Â
Undaunted, the Lakers would answer back little more than a minute later as senior forward
Denisha Paskell (McDonough, Ga.) fed junior forward
Renee Gillespie (Kansas City, Kansas) in the box for the game-tying goal at 6:53. That would also make it two straight games with a goal for the Hutchinson Community College product.
Â
From that point forward, however, neither team could muster any offense as both went scoreless for the remainder of regulation. It would be a different story as the teams entered the overtime period, however.
Â
Following a Clayton State yellow card just over a minute into the frame, the Saints would capitalize on a deflection on an attempted clear. Off of the miscue, Megan O'Connor would collect the ball and go one-on-one with redshirt-junior goalkeeper
Jessica Charman (Harefield, England), putting the ball into the back right corner of the net for the game-winning goal.
Â
Rawcliffe and O'Connor would collect the only goals on the day for Limestone while Meredith Bailey would play all 93 minutes, making five saves while allowing just the one goal. She improves to 2-1 on the year.
Â
For Clayton State, Gillespie had the lone goal with Paskell notching the assist. Charman would go the distance in net as she made four saves and surrendered both goals. She is now 3-1 on the season.
Â
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, September 17 when they host Lander in their Peach Belt Conference opener. Game time is set for 5 p.m. as part of a double header with the men's team at Laker Field.
Â
NOTES
The meeting between Clayton State and Limestone was only the second in program history ... the first was a 3-1 loss in Gaffney, South Carolina on September 9, 1997.
