MORROW, Ga. – With a spot in the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Tournament on the line Clayton State (4-13, 2-7 PBC) battled back-and-fourth with Flagler (6-8-1, 5-4-0 PBC) before falling by a 4-3 score in overtime in an NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Saturday, October 29.
Â
Both teams were strong defensively over the first 29-plus minutes as neither could find the back of the net. That would change dramatically starting in the 30
th minute. At 29:23, freshman midfielder
Will Summerfield (Bedford, England) picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and shipped it to junior midfielder
Ryan King (County Durham, England) who proceeded to slam it home for his 12
th goal of the year.
Â
That 1-0 lead would quickly become a two goal margin less than four minutes later as King returned the favor, finding Summerfield for his sixth goal of the year at the 33:18 mark. The Saints would finally find their offense as they capitalized on a foul in the box. Juan Membreno then drilled home FC's first goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1 at 39:49. The teams would then take that margin to the break less than six minutes later.
Â
In the second half the Saints' offense would come to life as Membreno served in a corner kick directly in front of the goal in the 48
th minute. There, Pedro Silva delivered a bicycle kick, planting the ball in the middle of the net for the tying score.
Â
It wouldn't take Flagler long to make use of its new found offense again as Oscar Davidsson converted a pass from Samba Diop less than four minutes later to flip the script and give the Saints a 3-2 advantage at 51:05. That would remain the margin for more than 35 minutes before the Lakers were finally able to capitalize on one of their many charges to the goal.
Â
With 86:30 gone by, Summerfield served a ball from the right side – right to the head of graduate forward
Iain Smith (Suwanee, Ga.) who delivered the game-tying goal, putting it in on the right side. That score would eventually send the teams to overtime.
Â
In that extra session, however, it would be Flagler that would connect. Just under three minutes in, Diop corralled a loose ball in front of the net, finding Oscar Davidsson for the game winner at 92:43.
Â
Summerfield led the way for Clayton State with a goal and two assists while King finished with a goal and an assist. Smith had the only other offense with his eighth goal of the year. In net, freshman goalkeeper
Leuri Fraire (Dalton, Ga.) played all 92:43, allowing four goals with no credited saves to drop to 4-9.
Â
Membreno led the charge for the Saints with a goal and an assist while Davidsson, Silva and Salomao each had goals. Diop added an assist to cap off the offense. Lex Craggs went the distance in goal, making three saves against three goals allowed. He improves to 6-7-1.
Â
Final seeding for the 2016 Peach Belt Conference Tournament will be announced later this evening following the conclusion of all remaining games. However, with a 2-1 victory by USC Aiken over Montevallo, it appears that the Lakers will just miss the postseason. Further details will be on
