Clayton State Falls 4-1 at Defensive Minded Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Clayton State (2-12, 0-6 PBC) took on defending Peach Belt Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champion Young Harris (6-6, 3-3 PBC) but could not withstand a solid offensive effort as they dropped a 4-1 decision in an NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Tuesday, October 18.

After nearly 20 minutes, the Mountain Lions would strike first as Macauley King found Mikie Rowe for the go-ahead score at 19:46. King rifled it to the left post where Rowe buried it into the right corner.

Ramin Varnhorn would follow just under 10 minutes later as he converted a pass from Alex Jacq from six yards out to make it a 2-0 advantage, which would be the margin the teams would take to the half.

The score would stay that way deep into the second half before YHC got on the board again. This time it would be King benefiting from a foul in the box as he drew a penalty kick. With 81:48 on the clock, he would deposit the ball into the back of the net to extend to a 3-0 lead.

Almost five minutes later at 86:47, Carl Brannstrom would connect to make it 4-0 before the Lakers finally broke through. Freshman midfielder Will Summerfield (Bedford, England) got loose at the top left corner of the box and ripped one through the defense to make it 4-1 at 88:27 and ruin YHC's bid for a shutout.

Summerfield provided the only offense for Clayton State with his fourth goal of the year while junior midfielder Ryan King (County Durham, England) posted a pair of shots. Freshman goalkeeper Leuri Fraire (Dalton, Ga.) went the distance in net, making 11 saves and allowing four goals. It was his third double-digit save performance of the season as he falls to 2-7.

King notched a goal and an assist to lead the Mountain Lions while Brannstrom, Rowe and Varnhorn each had solo scores. Jacq would deliver the only other offense with his assist. Sebastian Thomsson played all 90 minutes and made two saves against one goal allowed to improve to 1-0 on the year.

The Lakers return home to take on USC Aiken on Saturday, October 22. Game time is set for a special 1 p.m. kick in advance of the women's game at Laker Field.
