MORROW, Ga. – Facing one of the few remaining league undefeateds, Clayton State (5-3, 1-1 PBC) could not overcome a three-goal barrage in falling 3-1 to UNC Pembroke (4-3, 3-0 PBC) in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, September 26.
No stranger to Laker Field following a neutral site game there a week ago, UNC Pembroke came out firing despite the slick conditions. Courtney Crump turned a slight breakaway on the left side into her fourth goal of the season when she drove the ball past the keeper and into the back right corner at the 7:19 mark.
It would remain a 1-0 margin until Crump struck again, this time launching a ball from the left side into the back right corner at 28:08 for a two goal advantage. The Lakers would respond less than six minutes later as senior midfielder
Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain), the Peach Belt's leading goal scorer, delivered her seventh of the season after she settled a ball right in front of the net and drove it home to close to 2-1.
Clayton State's defense would continue to hold down the potent offense of the Braves well into the second half, however, Crump would break through again, this time at the 65:55 mark. This time she slipped a defender and put a ball on the keeper that just caromed off and into the goal for a 3-1 lead. That would be a margin that UNCP's defense would make hold up for the two goal victory.
The Braves were led offensively by Crump's hat trick and on the defensive side by Janae Aiken in net. The latter recorded nine saves and allowed just one goal to improve to 4-3 on the year. The defense was also aided by a defensive save from Jillian Robson in the 71st minute.
For the Lakers, Marti Bartis had the lone goal as she took it herself in the 34th minute. Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Charlotte McCormack (Wexford, Ireland) played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves and allowing three goals to fall to 5-3 this season.
The Lakers return to action on Wednesday, September 30 when they travel to Montevallo (1-5-2). That game is slated for 5 p.m. (EST).
