NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Facing a Division I team that has 16 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 17 years, Clayton State (0-0, 0-0 PBC) was no match for a loaded Vanderbilt (0-0, 0-0 SEC) squad as they dropped a 92-32 decision in an NCAA women's basketball game on Saturday, November 7.
Redshirt-junior guard
Tierra Johnson (Edison, N.J.) led the way with seven points and a pair of rebounds while senior guard
Kayla Pryce (Melbourne, Fla.) finished with six points and two steals. Redshirt-junior forward
Ashley Cunningham (Douglasville, Ga.) posted a team-high five rebounds and senior center
DaQuenna Moore (Plantersville, Ga.) added four points, three boards and a block.
The Lakers would hang with the Commodores over the first several minutes of the first quarter, staying within 8-4 by the 6:54 mark, but that would quickly change. An NCAA Division I power that had made the NCAA Tournament every year since 1999, up until last season, Vanderbilt asserted itself with a 17-7 run over the remainder of the quarter.
That burst left them with a 25-11 margin entering the second, a frame that would see them score the first 10 points to extend the run to 27-7 and the score to 35-11 by the 6:49 mark. Despite a bucket by redshirt-junior guard
Tweety Hawkins (Madison, Ga.) at 6:13, it would be just a speed bump as it would get no better for Clayton State.
Over the next four minutes the lead would grow to 30 at 43-13 with 2:10 left in the half. Following a basket by Moore with just over two minutes to go, Vandy knocked down back-to-back triples to head to the break with a commanding 49-15 advantage.
After allowing just four points in the second quarter, the Commodores would score 10 of the first 12 points in the third. That would jump start a quarter that would see them outscore Clayton State 27-8 and push the lead to 76-23.
The Lakers would produce their second best quarter in the fourth period, scoring nine points while holding Vandy to just 16 points but could not prevent the 92-32 final.
Leading the Commodores was Rachel Bell with a game-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting along with eight rebounds and a pair of assists in just 21 minutes. Minta Spears notched 11 points and game-highs of eight assists and five steals. Morgan Batey had a solid all-around game with 10 points, six boards, three assists and a pair of steals while Christa Reed had 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers.
The Lakers will wrap up the preseason on Tuesday, November 10 when they return home for the Alumni Game. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at The Loch.
