Clayton State's Aleksi Tuominen Earns Program's First CoSIDA Academic All-District Honor in Men's Soccer

CoSIDA Academic All-District Release

MORROW, Ga. – Clayton State sophomore defender Aleksi Tuominen (Helsinki, Finland) has been selected as one of just 99 individuals nationwide to be named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team. He is the first individual to achieve that honor in the program's 24-year history.

He is one of just 14 student-athletes to earn the honor this season in the Southeast Region and becomes only the fifth Laker in the 26-year history of the athletic department to be so honored.

Women's soccer's Maria Marti Bartis has been named Academic All-District this season and, along with Tuominen, are the first non-cross country/track and field student-athletes to earn the distinction. They join Maia Kuhnen in 2015, Robert Spezzacatena in 2012 and Joni Guffey in 2002. Spezzacatena is the only Academic All-American in program history, earning Third-Team honors that season.

This year he has achieved an impressive 3.87 grade point average while being one of the team's top defenders. He has also notched a pair of goals and team-high four assists, including an assist in a 1-1 tie against No. 23 Wingate.

He has also earned PBC Defenderer of the Week honors on October 19, and been named to the PBC All-Academic Team this season.

Student-athletes are nominated and selected to the Academic All-District Team by Sports Information Directors who are members of CoSIDA. Each individual must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, have been at their current institution for at least one calendar year and be of sophomore standing or higher in order to be nominated.

Each selection to the All-District Team is now eligible for Academic All-American consideration. That group, consisting of First-, Second-, Third- and Honorable Mention Teams will be announced on Monday, November 23.
