Clayton State Falls to Undefeated Lander 1-0 Behind Early Goal

Boxscore GREENWOOD, S.C. – Taking on the only undefeated Peach Belt Conference school, Clayton State (6-3-1, 2-2 PBC) allowed an early goal and that would be all Lander (9-0, 4-0 PBC) would need as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory in an NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Saturday, October 10.

The teams would combine for 19 shots in the first half, 11 by the Lakers and eight from LU, but it would be one from Hugo Delhommelle that would make the difference. Taking a pass from Sam Lofts, Delhommelle drilled the go-ahead goal for Lander at the 16:58 mark.

Clayton State would fire off six more shots over the remainder of the half but just four over the final 45 minutes as the Bearcats held on for a 1-0 victory.

Delhommelle and Lofts provided the only offense on the day with a goal and assist, respectively to lead Lander. Defensively, Barett Nielsen played all 90 minutes in net and made six saves to earn the shutout and improve to 9-0 on the year.

The Lakers notched 15 shots on the day, led by graduate forward Iain Smith (Suwanee, Ga.) and junior forward Bilal Nakhli (Paris, France). Each had four shots with Smith putting three on net. In goal, senior goalkeeper Viltsu Tuumi (Pori, Finland) made eight saves and allowed just the one goal to suffer the narrow defeat and drop to 4-2-1.

Clayton State is back in action when they return home to face North Georgia on Wednesday, October 14. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Laker Field.

NOTES
The 1-0 victory is only the second for Lander on the year … overall, it is their fifth one goal victory.
