MORROW, Ga. – Three first half goals would be too much to overcome as Clayton State (7-7-1, 4-5-0 PBC) fell 4-0 to No. 5 Young Harris (13-0-1, 8-0-0 PBC) in an NCAA Division II men's soccer game on Wednesday, October 29.
The Mountain Lions Kendall Carballo took advantage of a pass from Alex Wyper at the 11:52 mark of the first half for a 1-0 lead and then quickly added a second just minutes later. This time it would be Khurram Shazad converting off a feed from Ilija Ilic at 16:41. YHC would continue their offensive burst as Shazad struck again, this time with 25:41 gone by and Samuel Mansour delivering the assist.
Not only would the teams take that margin to the break, it would hold for much of the remainder of the game. Young Harris' Craig Quinn pushed it to the final margin of 4-0 at 87:25 as he took it himself for the unassisted score.
Sophomore forward Sekou Thornwell (Atlanta, Ga.) had two of the five Laker shots, placing one on goal, while senior goalkeeper Nick Punter (Suffolk, England) played all 90 minutes in net, allowing all four goals and making 12 saves to take the loss, dropping to 5-7-1 on the year.
Shazad led YHC with a pair of goals with Carballo and Quinn registering the others. Mansour, Ilic and Wyper recorded the assists and Anton Viden posted a clean sheet in goal, notching three saves in 90 minutes.
Clayton State wraps up the regular season on Saturday, November 1 when they host Barry in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Laker Field.
