MORROW, Ga. – No. 14 Clayton State (15-2, 10-1 PBC) used three different goal scorers to race past USC Aiken (6-7-2, 4-4-1 PBC) by a 3-0 score in an NCAA Division II women's soccer game on Saturday, October 25.
"The girls were superb tonight and I'm delighted our seniors were able to get a win," said head coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "Tonight was all for them!"
It didn't take long for the potent Laker offense to kick into gear as junior defender Lucy Cunningham (Liverpool, England) found junior midfielder Maria Marti Bartis (Girona, Spain) for the go ahead goal at the 11:11 mark. That 1-0 margin would hold up the rest of the half as the teams headed to the break.
At the start of the second half, Marti Bartis would play a role in the second CSU goal as she assisted on a score by junior midfielder Rachael Schmidt (Snellville, Ga.) with 53:07 gone by in the game.
It wouldn't take nearly as long for the Lakers to strike a third time as senior forward Lois Edvardsson (Goteborg, Sweden) made the most of her final regular season home game as she converted a pass from fellow senior forward Melissa Hetherington (Burley, England) to reach the final margin at the 64:18 mark.
Marti Bartis, Schmidt and Edvardsson accounted for the goals for the Lakers while Marti Bartis added an assist along with helpers from Cunningham and Hetherington. Junior goalkeeper Charlotte McCormack (Wexford, England) played all 90 minutes, recording three saves to earn the victory.
Caroline Gillespie led the Pacers with three shots while Sarah Moore added a pair, none finding the back of the netting. Nicole Cranny suffered the loss, allowing all three goals but making 18 saves in the process.
The Lakers return to the field on Wednesday, October 29 when they travel to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
