Redshirt-junior guard Madison Newby (Lawrenceville, Ga.) made her Clayton State debut a memorable one as she averaged 17.5 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals against two teams expected to be among the best in the Southeast Region.
Opening against Anderson (11/9), which beat the Lakers handily last year, Newby dropped 20 points on an array of moves, dished out three assists, grabbed a pair of rebounds and notched a steal in a thrilling 67-66 victory. She also shot 10-of-13 from the foul line.
She would continue her strong play the following day against No. 21 Wingate (11/10). In 31 minutes she would finish with 15 points, again impressive from the line at 9-of-14, three assists, three boards and another two steals. That performance, including clutch buckets and free throws late, led Clayton State to another heart stopping victory, this time 56-54 and again in the final seconds.
