Laker women’s finish 5th at Disney Cross Country Classic
Kissimmee, FL – In a field of 27 teams, the Clayton State women's cross country team brought home a top five finish in the Disney Cross Country Classic held in Kissimmee, FL Saturday.
The Lakers placed fifth in the 5K race with 190 points. Malone, from Ohio, took top honors with 74 points, followed by NCAA Division I Tulane and Florida Gulf Coast in second and third. Regis, from Colorado, placed fourth with 150 points.
"Our goal was a Top 5 team finish and we succeeded," said head coach Mike Mead. "I was hoping for fast times, but this is cross country and it's all about placing and we did our job. Conditions were not such for good times. It rained the night before which created a wet course with mud in several sections. It was extremely humid, which affected some of our ladies."
Junior Racquel Valadez led the Lakers with a time of 19:40, placing 13th overall out of 232 runners. Senior Paige Galvin also had a top-20 finish, finishing 19th with a time of 19:55. Junior Samantha Walling placed 36th with a time of 20:29, followed by junior Gisele Javois in 65th with a time of 21:13 and freshman Taylor Galvin rounding out the scoring in 71st with a time of 21:20.
Sophomores Kendra Wilson and Holly McNorton finished with times of 22:08 and 23:08, respectively.
Clayton State will take off next week before returning to action on October 20th for the Peach Belt Conference Championships hosted by Montevallo.
