Clayton State women finish seventh overall at NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – November 5, 2011 – The Clayton State Laker women's cross country team concluded the 2011 season on Saturday with an impressive seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals at McAlpine Park.
The Lakers finished with 218 points in the 6K event to place seventh in the 26-team field. Clayton State finished only 15 points off the pace of Augusta State, and defeated UNC Pembroke by 16 points, Lees-McRae by 22 pints and Lenior-Rhyne by 25 points.
For Clayton State, junior Paige Galvin earned Division II All-Southeast Region honors by finishing 25th overall with a time of 23:14.6. The Top 25 runners in the field earn All-Region honors. Just missing All-Region honors with a 26th-place finish was freshman Patricia Olleros in 23:17.4. This marked just the second race of the season for Olleros, who also plays for the Laker women's soccer team.
Sophomore Samantha Walling also came close to an All-Region selection as she placed 28th overall in 23:22.9, while freshman Jesscia Smith finished 42nd overall in 23:48.5. Rounding out the Laker scoring was freshman Maia Kuhnen finishing 104th (25:05.4), sophomore Gisele Javois finishing 125th (25:43.7) and freshman Holly McNorton placing 127th (25:49.2).
Queens won the event with 39 points, out-distancing Montevallo by 101 points. Both teams qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships on Nov. 19 in Spokane, Wash.
