Clayton State places four on USTFCCCA Women’s Outdoor All-Southeast Region team
NEW ORLEANS, La. – May 16, 2012 – The USTFCCCA (United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association) released its 2012 Outdoor All-Region teams on Wednesday, and the Clayton State Lakers placed four athletes on the All-Southeast Region team.
Selected from Clayton State were Shannon Smith, Kayla Mobley, Maia Kuhnen and Jessica Covington. This marks the first All-Region selection for Smith, Kuhnen and Covington, while Mobley is a repeat All-Region selection. In addition, Kuhnen was also an Indoor All-Region selection in both the 800-meter run and the distance medley relay.
Smith, a junior from Cocoa, Fla., was selected for the high jump, as was Covington, a freshman from Tifton, Ga. The duo, which also plays for the nationally-ranked Clayton State women's basketball team, joined the Laker track and field program just over a month ago and made their mark in the high jump.
Smith was a provisional NCAA Division II qualifier with a season-best jump of 5-7.5 feet at the Coach "O" Invitational at Troy on April 28. Smith also won the high jump at the Division II Southeast Regional, while Covington placed third.
Another member of the Lacer women's basketball team, Mobley was selected All-Region for a second straight season in the shot put. The senior from Plantation, Fla., won the shot put event at both the Emory Invitational and the Division II Southeast Regional. She also set the Clayton State team record in the shot put at the Southeast Regional with a distance of 42-7 feet.
Kuhnen, a freshman from Trier, Germany, was selected All-Region for the 800-meter run. She recorded three Top 10 finishes in the event for the season, including finishing second at the Division II Southeast Regional and third at the Emory Invitational.
