Clayton State women finish eighth overall at Emory Classic

ATLANTA – March 31, 2012 – The Clayton State Laker women's track and field team recorded four Top Five finishes and set a school record in the process for an eighth-place finish at the Emory Classic on Saturday.

Clayton State finished with 30 points in the 21-team field, which was won by host Emory. The Lakers placed third amongst NCAA Division II participants.

The highlight was in the 4x800-meter relay, where the team of Maia Kuhnen, Monique Belmudes, Paige Galvin and Samantha Walling set a school record with a time of 9:40.13 in placing third overall. That broke the previous mark that had stood for 10 years. The Clayton State team of Kuhnen, Belmudes, Walling and Gisele Javois also placed seventh overall in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:11.99.

Individually, senior Kayla Mobley excelled in the field events. She placed second overall in the shot put with a throw of 40-5 feet, and fifth in the discus in 119-3 feet. The Lakers had two Top 10 finishes in the 3,000-meter run as Galvin placed third overall in 10:53.7, and Jesscia Smith finished sixth in 11:39.83. Walling also placed eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:26.80, while Kuhnen placed ninth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.71.

In addition, Silvia Espelt placed 10th overall in the javelin with a throw of 86-9 feet.

The next meet for Clayton State is the Gem of the Hills Invitational at Jacksonville State next Saturday (April 7).
