Laker women’s soccer season ends in PBC Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday
Dahlonega, GA – The Clayton State women's soccer season came to an end on Tuesday, falling 4-2 to North Georgia in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Championships in Dahlonega, GA.
With North Georgia leading 1-0 after the first half of play, both teams went on a scoring frenzy early in the second half with five goals scored in a 10-minute stretch. The Saints took a 2-0 with 42 minutes remaining as Kelly Penston scored her second goal of the match, banking a shot off the side post for a goal.
Clayton State quickly answered though, cutting the deficit to 2-1 as senior forward Natalia Valentine scored two minutes later off an assist from junior midfielder Lea Notthoff, her team-leading sixth assist of the season. Notthoff played a ball into the box and Valentine beat the defense for her team-leading 11th goal of the year.
The Saints came right back two minutes later to re-establish its two-goal lead, as Abby Trevino scored off a pass from Penston.
The Lakers answered again less than a minute later as Valentine scored her second goal of the match, taking a pass from midfielder Alicia Robinson and then beating the North Georgia defense. The goal for Valentine was her 12th of the season and the 32nd for her career, which is third all-time on the Clayton State goals scored list.
Leading 3-2, North Georgia added some insurance with 31 minutes remaining as Caroline Wallace scored off a rebound of a previous shot to close out the scoring and secure the victory.
Clayton State senior keeper Laoise O'Driscoll finished with seven saves. North Georgia held a 21-10 shot advantage in the match.
The loss ends Clayton State's season with a 10-7-2 record on the year. The 10-win season was the program's first double-digit winning season since 2006.
