Lakers blank USC Aiken 1-0 in Peach Belt action

Morrow, GA – The Clayton State women's soccer team scored an early first half goal and held on for a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over USC Aiken at Laker Field Saturday.

The Lakers struck for a goal in the 23rd minute as defender Siliva Espelt converted a penalty kick, her fifth goal of the season. The play was set-up after Laker senior forward and leading scorer Natalia Valentine was taken down in the box on a scoring opportunity.

"It was critical to get 3 points today with the win today in terms of conference standings," said head coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "It was a tough physical match and with our limited numbers we are delighted to have come out on top and get a clean sheet."

With the win, the Lakers improve to 9-5-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the conference. The Lakers will return to action on Sunday, hosting Georgia Gwinnett in a 4 p.m. non-conference match.

The match was fairly even from a shot perspective, as USC Aiken finished with 12 shots compared to 11 for the Lakers. Keeper Laoise O'Driscoll had six saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
