Morrow, GA – The Clayton State women's soccer team dropped a tough on Sunday, falling 1-0 to non-conference opponent Georgia Gwinnett at Laker Field.
The Grizzlies scored the game-winning goal late in the second half as freshman midfielder Mackenzie Bailey powered a shot from 20 yards out past the outstretched arms of Laker keeper Laoise O'Driscoll in the 76th minute.
"Today was a big ask for us after a tough physical match last night," said head coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "We simply weren't fresh enough and our depleted squad size took its toll. That being said Georgia Gwinnett deserved the win; they outworked us for eighty minutes after we started well in the opening ten. This is a wake-up call for us with Young Harris coming here on Wednesday."
The loss drops Clayton State to 9-6-2 on the year. The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday, hosting conference foe Young Harris in a 5 p.m. match. The regular season finale will be Senior Night for the soccer programs.
Clayton State outshot Georgia Gwinnett 17-14 and O'Driscoll finished with six saves.
