Lakers quiet the Hurricanes 1-0 in women’s soccer action Wednesday
Americus, GA – The Clayton State women's soccer team got back on the winning track Wednesday, blanking Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern 1-0 in Americus, GA.
Clayton State forward Brooke Bortles scored the lone goal of the match late in the first half. The game-winning play in the 42nd minute was setup on a pass from midfielder Pearl Slattery, who passed a ball through the box to the far post, allowing Bortles the opportunity for the score. The goal for Bortles was her second on the season, while the assist for Slattery was her first of the year.
"We weren't at our best today and were especially poor in the final third," said head coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "We worked hard and at the end of the day it's a conference win on the road."
With the win, the Lakers improve to 8-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the conference. The Lakers will return to action on Saturday, hosting Peach Belt rival USC Aiken in a 5 p.m. match.
Clayton State controlled the match, outshooting Georgia Southwestern 19-7 in the game and had four corner kicks compared to only one for the Hurricanes. Keeper Laoise O'Driscoll had three saves and recorded her third shutout of the season.
