Clayton State defeats UNC Pembroke 3-1 in Peach Belt play

Pembroke, NC  – The Clayton State women's soccer team scored two first half goals and held on in the second half to register its first Peach Belt Conference win of the season.

The Lakers scored two goals in a 13-minute span to capture the victory, defeating Peach Belt Conference rival UNC Pembroke 3-1. Lea Notthoff got the Lakers on the scoreboard in the 20th minute, taking a pass from Natalia Valentine and finding the back of the net in the bottom left corner.

Clayton State pushed its lead to 2-0 on a powerful shot in the back of the goal by Brooke Bortles, set up off a pass from Danielle Fletcher. UNC Pembroke cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second half as Amalia Arvidsson scored in the 63rd.

The Lakers put the game away in 82nd minute as Laker leading scorer Valentine scored her sixth goal of the season on an unassisted play.

 "Anytime you can get a conference road win it's great," said head coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "We were very good in the first 45, but UNCP was better than us in the second half."

The wins improves Clayton State to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in Peach Belt Conference play. The Lakers will continue Peach Belt Conference play on Wednesday, hosting Montevallo in a 5 p.m. match.

Clayton State keeper Laoise O'Driscoll got the win and finished with nine saves in the match.
