Morrow, GA – The Clayton State women's soccer team scored one first half goal and then flexed its defensive muscles to prevail 1-0 over in-state rival West Georgia at Laker Field Wednesday.
Clayton State junior midfielder Lea Nothoff scored the game-winner in the 32nd minute, heading in a shot over West Georgia keeper Mary Laza. The play was set-up on a pass from senior forward Natalia Valentine. The goal was Notthoff's first of the season and Valentine's second assist of the year.
"The most important thing tonight was getting the win," said second-year coach Gareth O'Sullivan. "We played well defensively and tightened up some defensive lapses that we had made in recent games."
Clayton State, who improved to 4-3 on the year with the victory, will return to Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday, traveling to UNC Pembroke for a 5 p.m. contest. The Lakers will return home on Wednesday, September 26th for another PBC game against Montevallo.
In Wednesday game, Clayton State outshot West Georgia 11-6 and had eight corner kicks compared to five for the Wolves. Clayton State senior keeper Laoise O'Driscoll finished with three saves.
