Clayton State’s Espelt selected Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer
AUGUSTA, Ga. – November 1, 2011 – The Peach Belt Conference released its final weekly honors for the 2011 season in women's soccer on Tuesday, and the Clayton State's Silvia Espelt was selected as the Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Espelt, a freshman from Madrid, Spain, becomes the second Clayton State player to earn a weekly honor this season. Junior goalkeeper Laoise O'Driscoll was selected Goalkeeper of the Week for two straight weeks. Both have keyed Clayton State's late-season surge heading into today's Peach Belt Conference Tournament game at North Georgia.
Espelt spearheaded a Clayton State to two more shutouts last week as the Lakers blanked Alabama-Huntsville 1-0 in double-overtime on Wednesday and then knocked off USC Aiken 2-0 on Saturday. She scored the game-winner against Alabama-Huntsville on a penalty kick in the second overtime after missing a penalty kick in the first overtime.
For the season, Espelt has helped pace Clayton State to 10 shutouts, matching the most shutouts in a season for a Laker squad.
Clayton State squares off at 4:30 p.m. at North Georgia in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
