Clayton State women move up to No. 2 in national poll
MORROW, GA – The undefeated and Peach Belt Conference champion Clayton State women's basketball team moved up to #2 in the country in the latest edition of the USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Lakers (24-0; 17-0 PBC) moved up from the third spot after previous top-ranked Ashland lost last Thursday to Findlay 66-51, leaving Clayton State and Bentley as the only two undefeated teams at the NCAA Division II level.
The Lakers won two games last week, defeating Montevallo 75-61 on Saturday and Georgia College 71-49 on Thursday. The victory over Georgia College clinched Clayton State's third straight PBC regular season title.
Clayton State received six first place votes this week and 772 total points in the poll, which is conducted by 33 NCAA Division II coaches. Bentley with a 23-0 mark moved up to #1, received 24 first place votes and 792 total points. Ashland dropped to No. 3 in the country.
Along with Clayton State, the only other Peach Belt school in the rankings is USC Aiken (19-4) at No. 16.
The Clayton State women's basketball program is 88-5 (.946) over the last three years, the top winning percentage of any program at the NCAA Division II level. The Lakers have been ranked in the Top-25 in 71 straight national polls. The last time the Lakers weren't ranked among the country's Top-25 teams dates back five years ago in the Jan. 6th poll in the 2008-09 season.
The Lakers will continue conference play this week, hosting Georgia Southwestern on Saturday at 5:30 for Senior Night.
