Clayton State maintains No. 3 ranking in USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II poll
MORROW, GA – The Clayton State women's basketball team maintained its hold on the No. 3 ranking in the country in the latest edition of the USA Today Sports/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Lakers won two games last week, including a 67-54 victory win at Augusta State, who was ranked 23rd in the nation at the time. Clayton State also won 83-51 over Montevallo on Saturday, a Falcon team that entered the game as the No. 2 team in the Peach Belt Conference West Division.
Clayton State, with a 22-0 overall record and a 15-0 mark in Peach Belt Conference play, received 716 total points in the poll, which is conducted by 33 NCAA Division II coaches. Ashland University remains the nation's top-ranked team with a 24-0 record and 775 points, followed by Bentley with a 21-0 mark and 741 points.
Ashland, Bentley and Clayton State are the only three undefeated teams at the NCAA Division II level.
Along with Clayton State, two other Peach Belt schools are in the rankings as USC Aiken (18-3) sits at the No. 12 spot and Augusta State (16-4) comes in a No. 24.
The Lakers will continue conference play this week, traveling to play Georgia College on Thursday and playing at Montevallo on Saturday. With one more league win, the Lakers will secure of at least share of its sixth Peach Belt Conference regular season championship in the last nine years.
