Undefeated Lakers remain 4th in latest NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll
MORROW, GA – The Clayton State women's basketball team remains undefeated in the 2012-13 season and near the top of the national rankings in the latest edition of the USA Today Sports/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll released yesterday.
The Lakers (7-0) kept pace with the leaders, capturing their first two Peach Belt Conference wins defeating Georgia Southwestern 73-51 and Columbus State 66-47. Over the last three seasons, including 2012-13, Clayton State has a 73-5 record (.936), the best in NCAA Division II women's basketball.
Clayton State's patented defense is once again causing havoc for opponents, as the Lakers rank second in the country in scoring defense, holding opponents on average to 47 points per contest. The squad ranks eighth in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 31.1 percent from the floor and fifth in blocked shots at 6.7 per game.
The Lakers will return to action later this month in the Heritage Bank Holiday Classic on Saturday, December 29th and Sunday, December 30th. The Lakers will play Benedict on Saturday, followed by Barton in the two-day event.
Ashland, with a 12-0 record, sits atop the poll, followed by Bentley and Peach Belt Conference rival USC Aiken, who is ranked 3rd with a 8-0 start.
