LILBURN, Ga. – February 28, 2012 – With the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on the horizon, the Clayton State Laker women's basketball team advanced one spot to No. 3 in the nation in the new USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 poll released on Tuesday.
Clayton State (26-2, 16-1 Peach Belt Conference), the Peach Belt Conference regular season champion, received 701 points and three first-place votes in this week's poll - eight points behind No. 2-ranked Wayne State (26-2). The Lakers lead No. 4 Ashland (25-1) by 19 points. Clayton State won twice last week - a 78-44 victory over Montevallo on Wednesday, and a 93-58 triumph against Georgia College on Saturday.
Clayton State is one of three Peach Belt Conference teams ranked this week. USC Aiken (23-3, 16-2 PBC) is ranked ninth, up one spot from No. 10, while Lander (20-6, 15-3 PBC) drops four spots from No. 19 to No. 23. In addition, Georgia Southwestern (18-8, 10-7) received votes for a second straight week.
Despite suffering its first defeat of the season last week, Cal-San Diego (27-1) maintained its No. 1 ranking for an eighth straight week. Rounding out the rest of the Top 10 is Edinboro (25-1) at No. 5, Bentley (24-3) at No. 6, Metro State (24-2) at No. 7, Alaska-Anchorage (25-4) at No. 8, USC Aiken at No. 9 and Washburn (25-4) at No. 10.
Clayton State opens the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Thursday with a 1p.m. quarterfinal matchup against Augusta State at the Lumpkin Center at Columbus State.
