500! Milestone for Cox as No. 4 Clayton State women roll past Montevallo 78-44
MORROW, Ga. – February 22, 2012 – Kayla Mobley came to play on Wednesday night in getting head coach Dennis Cox a milestone victory as the Clayton State Laker women's basketball team rolled past visiting Montevallo 78-44 in Peach Belt Conference action at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
The victory improves Clayton State, ranked No. 4 in the nation in Division II, to 25-2 overall and 15-1 in Peach Belt play. It also marks the 500th collegiate coaching victory for Cox at both the junior college and four-year levels. Cox is now 500-185 combined in 22 seasons at the collegiate level.
Montevallo falls to 10-15 overall and 5-11 in the Peach Belt.
Mobley was a key factor for the Lakers' success. The junior forward scored a career-high 22 points on 10-for-11 shooting from the field with eight rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds. She scored 14 of her points in the second half.
The Lakers took control by closing the first half on a 13-1 run. Tanisha Woodard scored twice on driving lay-ups, while Mobley converted a lay-up off an offensive rebound and two free throws. A lay-up by Drameka Griggs at the 1:55 mark gave Clayton State a 40-18 lead at halftime. The Lakers did not allow Montevallo a field goal in the final seven minutes of the first half.
Clayton State never let Montevallo get closer than 22 points in the second half. The Lakers opened the half on an 8-2 run as Mobley and Shacamra Jackson both scored on lay-ups inside. Griggs then scored in transition to give Clayton State a 48-20 lead at the 14:06 mark.
The Lakers stretched their lead to 32 points with a 10-2 run in the latter part of the second half. Mobley scored six points during the stretch; including a baseline jumper to give Clayton State a 68-36 lead with 4:57 remaining.
Clayton State took its largest lead of the game, 78-42 on a 3-point basket by freshman Shadawn Clanton with 1:26 remaining.
In addition to Mobley, Jackson and Keona Dixon each scored 10 points for Clayton State. Senior wing Tanisha Woodard scored nine points with 12 rebounds, while Griggs and Alexiss Griffin each added eight points. The Lakers scored 31 points off Falcon turnovers.
Tiffany McClure scored 15 points to pace Montevallo.
Clayton State closes out the regular season on Saturday, playing host to in-state rival Georgia College at 5:30 p.m.
