LILBURN, Ga. – January 31, 2012 – After holding steady for the last two weeks at No. 2 in the nation, the Clayton State Laker women's basketball team dropped three spots to No. 5 in the new USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 poll released on Tuesday.
Clayton State (19-2, 9-1 Peach Belt Conference) received 635 points in this week's poll - 21 points behind No. 4-ranked Wayne State (19-2). The Lakers lead No. 6 Ashland (18-1) by 36 points. The Lakers split two games last week, dropping a tough 59-57 decision against Lander on Wednesday, but rebounding to defeat USC Aiken 86-76 on Saturday.
Clayton State is one of three Peach Belt Conference teams ranked this week. USC Aiken (16-3, 9-2 PBC) is ranked 16th, down one spot from No. 15, while Lander (15-3, 10-0 PBC) improves five spots from No. 24 to No. 19.
Cal-San Diego (20-0) maintained its No. 1 ranking for a fourth straight week, while Edinboro (18-0) moved up to No. 2 and Metro State (18-1) is now No. 3). Rounding out the rest of the Top 10 is Fort Lewis (16-2) at No. 7, Alaska-Anchorage (19-3) at No. 8, Bentley (17-3) at No. 9 and Northeastern State (17-2) at No. 10.
Clayton State is back in action again on Saturday with a key Peach Belt Conference match-up at Montevallo.
