200! Milestone for Cox as No. 3 Clayton State women roll past Augusta State 85-47
MORROW, Ga. – January 14, 2012 – The milestones continued to grow for Clayton State women's head basketball coach Dennis Cox on Saturday night. In addition, his Lakers also continued their torrid winning streak in the process.
Clayton State made it 13 straight victories as the Lakers rolled past visiting Augusta State 85-47 in Peach Belt Conference action at the Athletics and Fitness Center. Clayton State, ranked No. 3 this week in Division II, improves to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the Peach Belt.
For Cox, it was his 200th victory in his eighth season at the Clayton State helm. He is now 200-46 overall with a whopping winning percentage of .813, making him the third-winningest active women's head coach at the Division II level.
Augusta State is now 7-7 overall and 3-4 in the Peach Belt.
There was little doubt that the milestone would take place as the Lakers shot 51 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free throw line. Defensively, Clayton State limited Augusta State to only 36 percent shooting from the field and only 11 percent (1-for-9) from 3-point range. The Lakers also out-rebounded the Lady Jaguars 38-27.
An early 10-2 run gave Clayton State a 25-9 lead as Kayla Mobley scored on a jump shot at the 8:15 mark.
Augusta State trimmed the lead to 13 points, but Clayton State finished the first half on an 11-0 run. A Brittany Hall 3-point basket gave the Lakers a 40-16 lead with 40 seconds remaining, and sophomore center Shacamra Jackson scored on a put-back as time expired to give Clayton State a commanding 44-16 lead at halftime.
The Lady Jaguars never got closer than 26 points in the second half as Clayton State kept its lead above 30 points for a majority of the second half. Two free throws from junior center Shannon Smith gave the Lakers a 60-25 lead at the 14:43 mark. Clayton State then used a 10-2 run to increase its lead to 36 points.
A tip-in off a missed shot by sophomore forward Brandice Howard gave the Lakers an 82-45 lead with 2:11 remaining.
Hall paced a balanced Clayton State attack with 13 points, followed by senior Tanisha Woodard with 12 points and six assists. Junior Drameka Griggs scored 12 points off the bench with four assists, while Mobley scored 11 points and Jackson and Keona Dixon each added nine points. The Lakers got another strong performance from their bench with 34 points.
For Augusta State, sophomore guard Brittany White scored nine points.
Clayton State hits the road again this week with a two-game swing, starting on Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. encounter at Flagler.
